What Is Hypersexuality?

Hypersexuality refers to an excessive preoccupation with sexual thoughts, urges, or behaviours that may feel uncontrollable. It’s important to note that hypersexuality is not simply about having a high sex drive; it often stems from trauma, mental health challenges, or unmet emotional needs.

Signs of Hypersexuality

Common signs include:

  • Difficulty controlling sexual impulses.

  • Engaging in 'risky sexual behaviours' despite negative consequences.

  • Using sex/sexual behaviours as a coping mechanism for stress, trauma, or emotional pain.

  • Neglecting responsibilities or relationships due to sexual behaviours.

The Impacts of Hypersexuality

Hypersexuality can affect individuals in various ways:

  • Emotional: Feelings of shame, guilt, or isolation.

  • Social: Strained relationships or difficulty forming meaningful connections.

  • Physical: Increased risk of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) or other health issues.

Safe Ways to Channel Hypersexuality

  1. Mindful Movement: Activities like yoga, pole fitness, or dance can help channel energy positively.

  2. Creative Expression: Art, pottery, or writing can provide a constructive outlet for emotions.

  3. Therapy: Working with a trauma-informed therapist can address underlying issues and promote healing.
